      <image:title>Portfolio - Socially Engaged Design Workshops - 1. The Socially Engaged Design Process</image:title>
      <image:caption>I introduce the socially engaged design process, which describes design through 5 core phases and iteration between. Underlying the entire design process are 4 consistent activities: reflection, prototyping and testing, gathering information, and synthesizing information.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e6e699611654c7854e5a194/1616820816691-WTXFVC55N68DW6XW7M1K/2+-+Design+Ethnography.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - Socially Engaged Design Workshops - 2. Design Ethnography Methods</image:title>
      <image:caption>Many of my workshops focus on design ethnography methods, especially interviewing. I make sure to define design ethnography and share its draw from anthropological methods.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e6e699611654c7854e5a194/1616820817294-SP3WWVKS3T5N5RBHCEVM/3+-+Interview+Types.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - Socially Engaged Design Workshops - 3. Interview Approaches</image:title>
      <image:caption>We tie academic research on design, which many of us have backgrounds in, to the practical applications of this research. For example, I teach different types of interview methods in order to help students envision the many options they have when going about their design projects and ways to choose an approach.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Socially Engaged Design Workshops - 4. The Flow of Interviews</image:title>
      <image:caption>I also describe the importance of building trust with interviewees, which entails mutual respect, listening, and build up before diving into higher intensity stories. I emphasize that it is a privilege to peer into someone’s experiences and is therefore important to center their comfort and be responsible with what they share.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Socially Engaged Design Workshops - 5. Interview Lab Activity</image:title>
      <image:caption>My colleague, Ilka, and I understand the importance of practicing interviews and interview protocols to help interviews go smoothly. We designed a role-play activity, Interview Lab, for use in our workshops to help students test out their questions, share feedback with their peers, and understand first-hand how written questions can feel different once spoken.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Socially Engaged Design Workshops - 6. Synthesizing Data</image:title>
      <image:caption>I also teach ways to synthesize qualitative data, including affinity mapping data into insights. From this date, teams can generate How Might We questions and criteria that would make an outcome successful.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Socially Engaged Design Workshops - 7. Ideation</image:title>
      <image:caption>Once participants have done the work to set up their solution-neutral challenge or design question, I facilitate workshops on ideation methods. I introduce tools, such as design heuristic cards, that can help generate even more ideas.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Socially Engaged Design Workshops - 8. Prototyping and Feedback</image:title>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Socially Engaged Design Workshops - 9. Power, Privilege, and Identities in Design</image:title>
      <image:caption>Due to my facilitation experience with the Ginsberg Center, I put on workshops that introduce and then dive deeper into how power, privilege, and identities play a role in design. I facilitate thoughtful conversations and walk through scenarios to foster more reflection in design.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Resource Hub to Support Mentors and Houseless Youth - 1. Discovery + Research</image:title>
      <image:caption>I directed our team through discovery and research, where we first conducted desk research to learn more about youth houselessness and NAFY before diving in. Then, we conducted listening with several NAFY staff to identify insights related to a resource hub.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e6e699611654c7854e5a194/1616819350956-SD6CGEBI2ISSWH3Z6MHB/2+-+Insights.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - Resource Hub to Support Mentors and Houseless Youth - 2. Insights + Ideation</image:title>
      <image:caption>We created an affinity map in MURAL, a remote visual collaboration tool, in order to understand what themes arose from the listening session data. From this affinity map, I led the processing of converting the themes into core How Might We (HMW) questions that we each voted on based on importance and preference. We narrowed the HMWs into two overarching categories of building trust and connection during the pandemic and ways to help mentors support their youth directly.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e6e699611654c7854e5a194/1616819352088-9PG1DB4LIOYL4TA7EDR8/3+-+Prototyping.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - Resource Hub to Support Mentors and Houseless Youth - 3. Prototyping + Feedback</image:title>
      <image:caption>From these HMW’s, we ideated and identified components of a resource hub that we wanted to test. Using Figma and Google Slides, we developed prototypes to test assumptions around 4 key components.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e6e699611654c7854e5a194/1616819352581-1DLNIB6LCCS2UGSI48HA/4+-+Content+Management.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - Resource Hub to Support Mentors and Houseless Youth - 4. Testing Content Management and Trust</image:title>
      <image:caption>I developed one wireframe prototype to test how information would be perceived and trusted depending on who could post resources and the need for updated resources. We learned that staff and youth wanted a lower-stakes way to update information (e.g. - a food box supply ran out for the day) without editing the entire post, which led us to consider comment-style updates.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Resource Hub to Support Mentors and Houseless Youth - 5. Card Sorting for Information Hierarchy</image:title>
      <image:caption>We also created a card sorting activity on Google Slides for youth and staff to share live feedback on information hierarchy and specific types of content they would want to see on a resource hub.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Resource Hub to Support Mentors and Houseless Youth - 6. NAFY Staff Profiles</image:title>
      <image:caption>Something I heard during the listening sessions was the siloed nature information and roles in the field. One thing I wanted to test out in response to this was the idea of NAFY staff profiles, mainly to support staff connections between each other. We learned with this prototype that easy ways to search for specialties and interests between NAFY coaches and staff would be helpful and that there was potential for youth to engage with this feature in tailored ways.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Resource Hub to Support Mentors and Houseless Youth - 7. Reflection + Iteration</image:title>
      <image:caption>After the full day feedback session, we reflected on all we learned from our prototypes and earlier listening sessions. One of the key insights was the need for more interconnected sharing of information between coaches due to the mass amounts of information one coach has to sift through to share with their youth.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:caption>After reflecting on all we heard, we iterated on our ideas to propose a digital sharing space with two components: a virtual bulletin board and a messaging platform. We realized the nuances of information flow that were identified as useful and that multiple platforms could be utilized to make those types of interactions more effective.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Entering, Engaging, and Exiting Communities Workshops - 1. Facilitating E3 Workshops</image:title>
      <image:caption>I facilitated workshops for many audiences, including students in a sustainability fellowship, social work, public health, freshman psychology, and volunteering organizations. We adopted a co-facilitation model for each workshop to help navigate sensitive group dynamics, and we tailored each workshop to each audience.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Entering, Engaging, and Exiting Communities Workshops - 2. Community Engagement as a Metaphor</image:title>
      <image:caption>We introduced community engagement as a metaphor to help participants envision the importance of acknowledging their roles. We envisioned community organizations and members walking along a path. Service learning students join them through their projects, walk alongside them, and then part ways, while communities still remain on their path.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Entering, Engaging, and Exiting Communities Workshops - 3. What is Community?</image:title>
      <image:caption>We broke down “community” into its definition and the heterogeneity of what communities can be formed around. This step was important to ensure that participants don’t group a “community” too broadly and to identify and appreciate the many nuances and types of communities.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Entering, Engaging, and Exiting Communities Workshops - 4. Equitable Community Engagement</image:title>
      <image:caption>With a more nuanced view of communities and community engagement, we shared the common outcomes of service learning that lean in favor of student learning over community priorities. Our goals were to share practices to balance the scales and achieve positive, humanizing, and sustainable impact in community engagement work.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Entering, Engaging, and Exiting Communities Workshops - 5. IAP2 Spectrum of Engagement</image:title>
      <image:caption>One practice we shared was evaluating community engagement projects based on where they fell on an adapted form of the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2)’s Spectrum of Engagement. We wanted participants to be able to understand what level of engagement they and their community partners actually wanted, expected, and implemented.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Entering, Engaging, and Exiting Communities Workshops - 6. Social Identity Wheel</image:title>
      <image:caption>I often led exercises around social identities as well to begin to address the importance of identity and how it influences our actions, reactions, and interactions. One such activity was a carefully facilitated social identity wheel exercise.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e6e699611654c7854e5a194/1616818437633-M7RM3QK6XH61POG9XB9R/7+-+Power+Mapping.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Portfolio - Entering, Engaging, and Exiting Communities Workshops - 7. Power Mapping</image:title>
      <image:caption>Another deeper exercise I led was around power mapping. After a think-pair-share around everyone’s power maps, we facilitated discussion around ways in which identities interacted with those sources of power. The goals were to allow participants to reflect on their different sources of personal power in order to be able to consider ways in which power and identities show up, especially in community interactions.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Entering, Engaging, and Exiting Communities Workshops - 8. Cultural Humility</image:title>
      <image:caption>I always emphasized the importance of cultural humility in not only our community engagement work, but in our overall lives as well. Cultural humility acknowledges that learning about and with communities is a lifelong process, as opposed to cultural competence which presumes “mastery” of cultural understanding.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Through many reflective conversations with our clients, Ann and I asked questions to dig deeper into their initial workshop goals. <image:title>Portfolio - Innovation Salon - 3. Mapping Workshop Goals</image:title>
      <image:caption>We decided to break down the day into 4 activities to strategically place converging and diverging activities around lunch and energy levels. <image:title>Portfolio - Innovation Salon - 4. Setting the Stage - First Activity (Q1)</image:title>
      <image:caption>We learned from our clients that many participants would be uncertain about how utility-research partnerships could look. To set the stage, we intentionally started with a Partnership Fishbowl activity (inspired by a Liberating Structures method) to facilitate reflective conversation around the benefits and requirements of collaboration.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Innovation Salon - 5. Brainstorming Scaffolded Activities</image:title>
      <image:caption>For the next activity, I considered ways to scaffold activities to reach the overarching workshop goals with each activity option. <image:title>Portfolio - Innovation Salon - 6. Trends Mapping Activity (Q2)</image:title>
      <image:caption>The finalized Q2 activity was on mapping trends. I carefully considered potential power dynamics and logistics for each activity. In this case, I used color-codes to ensure balance of stakeholder input in each discussion, and we prepared each color-coded workstation at each table to ensure the instructions were clear and our goal of balancing tables was easily implemented.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Innovation Salon - 7. Needs for Innovation Activity (Q3)</image:title>
      <image:caption>The color coded trends from Q2 were grouped by topic, and participants voted on which of the topics that had shared interest between both groups they wanted to work on for Q3. For Q3, I designed a brainstorming activity around needs for innovation for each topic that made progress on each of the workshop’s 3 overall goals.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Innovation Salon - 8. Pitch Activity (Q4)</image:title>
      <image:caption>Lastly, we knew we wanted to end the day highlighting the opportunities for partnerships that emerged from the day. We wanted participants from each topic to pitch some possible project ideas around the needs for innovation, and I wanted participants to write on cards with their interests, questions, and contact information as applicable for each pitch that we could compile and share back out after the workshop.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Adjustable Pediatric Prosthetic Socket - 3. Iterations Based on Cross-Functional Feedback</image:title>
      <image:caption>I led brainstorming sessions with the adult socket R+D team and developed numerous ideas to accommodate the size and rapid growth of children. Based on feedback from prosthetists, the production team, and the textiles team, I iterated on the overall socket system and individual components.</image:caption>

What started out as a project to help the elderly answer their doors ended up as a design that targeted the discovered latent need, getting up and down household stairs in a safe and efficient manner.</image:caption>
